A Place to think - 14th sunday, July - 2024
I had a thought about my young Gen Z friend telling me that millennials treat social media like a journal, documenting everything. Laughing, I replied, ‘That’s what you’re supposed to do, mf.’ It’s funny because, 1. She’s right, we do, and 2. She’s too young to understand that’s how we have used social media since the beginning. From Myspace to Tagged to Facebook—the big three. And let’s not forget Black Planet for the older millennials who crawled so I could walk. Sharing our lives with each other has been an activity for most of our existence as millennials. Maybe that’s the reason our generation accepted therapy so easily.
Having the power and free will to express our thoughts can be both a gift and a curse for social media, as we’ve all experienced in the past. It may not be the place to say everything you’re thinking, though I do think there is a time and place for it all. Sharing thoughts not only allows us to express ourselves, but it also pushes conversation, community, and change. My social media isn’t the place to hear my every thought, though I love to share because I, too, grow from the feedback of others' thoughts and opinions. So today, I create a place to think and document my perspective of life and times.
